Maximizing your space is crucial to enjoying a small living area. It’s not always the small space that is the issue but the amount of stuff. Learning how to organize and efficiently store things in a small space will make your home feel much larger.
Here are 5 tips to help keep you on track:
1. Purge and declutter often.
Declutter one room at a time as to not get overwhelmed. First decide what you absolutely can’t part with, then organize the rest into piles for donations, trash, or recycling. Remember, less is more. Think about which household items can be used for more than one job such as kitchen appliances.
2. Utilize vertical space.
Choose furniture that is tall and narrow rather than short and wide to minimize the footprint. Utilizing the nooks and crannies with hooks and hanging systems will allow for more storage space.
3. Purchase multi-functional furniture.
There are many beds that have built-in drawers, or benches that flip open to reveal extra storage space. Make the most out your furniture by purposefully buying pieces that can serve more than one function in your space.
4. Understand needs vs. wants.
Melissa Maker of Clean My Space, says it best: “The simplest trick before bringing anything new into your space is to ask yourself ‘Do I need it? Do I love it?’. If the answer to both is yes, then bring it home, but if it’s no, then leave it behind.” Adopting a ‘one in, one out’ rule may be best practice to uphold accountability and reduce clutter.
5. Use existing space efficiently.
Arranging drawers with dividers and maximizing closet space ensures everything has a home and helps keep it all organized. Every space is different but there is always a solution.
